Introduction-In the Drama, The Merchant Of Venice written by a famous dramatist William Shakespeare. there are many characters . All of them have great importance for their role but Antonio is the main character of the play. He is the Hero of the play from beginning to the end of the play.We find Antonio everywhere .He is a rich merchant and gives money without interest. He is a Christian.
Man of passive Nature-
Antonio is a man of passive and non-aggressive nature. Many time in the play we see his passiveness. in the beginning of the play we can see his melancholy mood. His hatred for Shlock-Antonio‘s hatred for shylock has many reasons .some of
them are:1-Antonio is a Christan and Shylock is a Jew. 2-Antonio gives money without any interest and on the other hand Shylock gives
money at a very high interest.
A Noble Man-
Antonio is a noble man .He is simple ,kind hearted and generous by nature.He is a true friend of Bassanio and he is always ready to help his dearest friend and in the play he borrowed money from Shylock for Bassano with a bond. It was his personal risk for his dear friend, Bassanio.
His Weakness-
Antonio hates all religions except Christanity.He is so simple by nature
that he fails to understand the tricks of Shylock.
In the end we can say that Antonio’s sincerity and frankness of expression is really admirable. He is the man of high character. He is the centre figure of the play.
