Q-Who was Channa ? Discuss his role and importance in the poem.
Ans-lntroduction-Channa who was second chief character of the poem The Light of
Asia .He was charioteer of Siddhartha .He guided the prince in almost every matterJ-he also proved himself to be a' true friend of the prince Siddhartha .He was also a good adviser of the prince.
A Good Servant-Channa was a good servant of Siddhartha .During his first visit, he went with him as a charioteer. And in second visit, he went with prince in disguise dress. When the prince asked him to return to the palace, He obeyed him willingly.
A Man of Worldly Knowledg :-Channa had got knowledge about the world .The prince did not know what old age, sickness and death were. He explained these things very clearly and cleverly. So we can say that Channa was a man of worldly knowledge.
Channa as a guide-Channa is not only a guide but a philosopher also .He explained death and old age like a philosopher. During his first visit, the prince asked what is old age? Channa replied that old age come to all and makes a man weak toothless. During second visit, he said that sickness comes to all in many ways .death is unavoidable. No man is immortal.
His Importance-Channa played a very most important role in the poem. He was an
obedient servant philosopher, a companion of the prince. If Channa had not been a part of poem, the poem would have been
tasteless .In the absence of Channa, The prince could not know the reality of the world.
Conclusion-Thus we can say that it was Channa alone who could give the correct information to the prince about the problems of life .He played the part of a preacher.
